Payton Turner labeled a roster cuts candidate who could land elsewhere

Bleacher Report’s Alex Kay called New Orleans Saints defensive end Payton Turner a potential roster cut that should be on other teams’ radar. There are some notable names on the list alongside Turner, but his status as a former first round draft pick does make him more appealing than others.

This designation meant two things for Turner, from Kay’s perspective. Turner may be released but has the talent to possibly contribute elsewhere. Kay argues Turner does indeed check both of those boxes:

He has the length and athleticism required to succeed on the edge at the professional level at 6’6″, 270 pounds while possessing plenty of explosiveness and power within that frame.
Although he hasn’t managed to translate those skills to the pro level yet, he has occasionally flashed when he hasn’t been sidelined by significant shoulder and foot injuries. He had a two-sack game against the Las Vegas Raiders in 2022, a contest that showcased his ability to disrupt.

Turner is obviously a camp casualty candidate. The Saints have drafted Isaiah Foskey early in the second round and also signed Chase Young in free agency over the last two years. New Orleans has been trying to find the answer at defensive end, but it’s been elusive.

Turner’s injury concerns have opened the door for more talent to walk in. The room could reach capacity with Turner as the odd man out. The problem with him is he has flashed his talent at times. It feels like if he was ever able to play over half a season he may be able to build upon some of these good moments. He’s only played 15 games in his three-year career.

If Turner is cut, another team could easily see those moments and give him a chance because of it. No one knows for sure what he could be with a full season. It’s likely a team would take the gamble to find out. But with Tanoh Kpassagnon possibly out for the year with a torn Achilles tendon, it’s unlikely the Saints are ready to cut ties with Turner just yet.

Saints 91-man 2024 offseason roster updated with jersey numbers

There won’t be a ton of changes to the New Orleans Saints’ starting lineup on offense and defense in 2024, but the depth chart looks awful different after the team signed a lot of veteran free agents to prove-it deals while holding onto most of their picks in this year’s NFL draft.

Training camp is still weeks away and the Saints have, for the most part, set up each position group. They’ll sign some free agents to try out during camp while bringing in replacements for inevitable injuries, and they might make a trade or two. But all of their big moves are behind them. They’ve already waived a couple of undrafted rookies (wide receiver Kyle Sheets and defensive end Nathan Latu) while signing some tryout free agents (tight end Jesper Horsted and cornerback Mac McCain).

While teams are typically limited to rostering 90 players during the offseason, the Saints were given an International Player Pathway exemption for rookie kicker Charlie Smyth. Here are all 91 players under contract with the Saints as they break for the summer, listed by jersey number:

The NFL has informed teams it will not hold a supplemental draft this year in 2024, according to a league memo. This marks the fourth time in five years that the league has opted out of this draft.

In 2023, the supplemental draft saw only two eligible players, with none getting selected after coming off a three-year hiatus. Jalen Thompson, drafted by the Arizona Cardinals in the fifth round of the 2019 supplemental draft, remains to be the last chosen player. So, is the supplemental draft a valuable and viable need in the NFL?

Despite the number of draftees in previous years, the...

B/R says Saints are failing at rebuilding despite not being in a rebuild

Bleacher Report’s Alex Ballentine placed the New Orleans Saints into the bucket of teams who are messing up their rebuild. There’s only one problem with that: the Saints aren’t rebuilding.

Ballentine was well aware of this point and even made that distinction for New Orleans in comparison to other teams on the list, claiming the Saints “aren’t the typical rebuilding team because they refuse to acknowledge that they should be rebuilding in the first place.” That alone makes the Saints’ inclusion here questionable.

The Saints have not embarked on a youth movement up and down the roster...

Defensive line is the Saints pivotal unit on defense

The New Orleans Saints defense has been the backbone of the team for a while at this point. Since the retirement of Drew Brees, the defense has bore a significantly heavier weight.

Offense has sputtered due to injuries and inconsistencies. The hope is Klint Kubiak joining as offensive coordinator will give an immediate benefit and lessen the weight the defense has to carry. However, the Saints can’t slack up defensively if they want to maximize their potential in 2024.

The Saints pass defense was strong despite having a lackluster pass rush. Marshon Lattimore and Paulson Adebo still form...

This is a big moment for Steve Gleason. The New Orleans Saints legend and hero of the 2006 “Rebirth” game after Hurricane Katrina will be honored with the Arthur Ashe Award for Courage at the 2024 ESPYS ceremony, ESPN announced Thursday.

That’s on top of sharing the time he has left with his family, friends, and old teammates.

Yesterday, ESPN+ released their rankings of every roster in the NFL. Their top 5 rosters in the league were the San Francisco 49ers, Kansas City Chiefs, Baltimore Ravens, New York Jets, and Detroit Lions. The New Orleans Saints placed 20th on this list, which, while in the bottom half of the league, was still second in their division. The Atlanta Falcons placed 19th and were the only NFC South team ahead of the Saints, with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers being ranked 22nd and the Carolina Panthers being ranked 29th.

In my opinion this ranking is pretty spot on. I would have them maybe a spot or...
