New Orleans has an underrated but major need at the safety position.

By Bob Rose - Athlon Sports

The New Orleans Saints have several major roster issues to address this offseason. Salary cap issues will limit free agency spending, so much of their roster improvements must come through the draft and young player development.

Questions at quarterback is what grabs the attention of most people, but there are far bigger problems on this team than Derek Carr. Injuries exposed a thin depth chart on offense, especially the line and at wide receiver.

Age and lack of young development deteriorated a defense that plummeted to the bottom of the NFL. Star players are well past their prime, with draft choices and free agent additions not stepping up as expected.

Two positions on defense epitomize this more than any others on the roster. We'll take a look at one today, perhaps the most underrated need for the Saints this offseason. ...

Should Saints consider Texas WR Isaiah Bond? 2025 NFL draft projection

The New Orleans Saints need a third receiver to pair with Chris Olave and Rashid Shaheed, which puts the position among the options in the 2025 NFL draft.

There is no telling when the Saints will opt to address the need in the draft, given just how many holes they have to fill, but Day 2 could be a good time to do it.

One of the more popular names that will be floating around will be Texas Longhorns speedster Isaiah Bond. Does he make sense for New Orleans, though?

Bond spent three years in college between the Longhorns and the Alabama Crimson Tide. He had 99 catches for 1,428 yards...

Jaxson Dart seems to be the one quarterback, other than Shedeur Sanders and Cam Ward, who NFL draft experts believe has a chance to creep into the first round. Because of this, there’s a big spotlight on his progression through the pre-draft process. How would he fit in Kellen Moore’s offense with the New Orleans Saints?

Walking away from the Senior Bowl, one big flaw highlighted in Dart’s game was his issues taking snaps under center. In general, the game has become more shotgun-based, but that’s especially true for Kellen Moore’s offense.

If Dart is selected by the New Orleans Saints...

Saints target a surprising QB in this unique PFF mock draft

It’s mock draft season, and Pro Football Focus’ Nathan Jahnke is doing an interesting exercise. He just did a mock draft with no trades, and every team had to draft an offensive skill player. So, no offensive linemen and no defenders.

Jahnke also excluded Travis Hunter under the assumption he would play primarily defense as a professional.

With only offensive playmakers on the board, the New Orleans Saints landed on Jalen Milroe to lead Kellen Moore’s offense. They chose to pass on Omarion Hampton and Jaxson Dart in favor of Milroe.

Passing on Hampton could simply be about how Jahnke...

Drew Brees answers burning question of whether or not he'll coach in the future

Former Saints quarterback Drew Brees has been one of the best signal-callers in NFL history, has dabbled in broadcast and has been quite the figure in the food industry scene between places like Walk-Ons and Smalls Sliders.

But one of the biggest questions surrounding his future, especially after his small stint at Purdue, is whether or not he will pursue a career in coaching in the future. For now, that does not seem like anything that will be on the immediate horizon. But, at the same time, Brees did not completely rule out the possibility.

“As far as specifically going into coaching...

Drew Brees shares his thoughts on what Saints should do in 2025 NFL draft

The Saints have no shortage of issues to address in the 2025 NFL draft, and one of the biggest questions is as to what New Orleans should do with their picks — specifically the first one. That will come in the first round when the Saints make their initial selection at No. 9 overall on April 24 as the action begins.

Former New Orleans quarterback Drew Brees recently shared his thoughts on what he thinks his former team should be getting to work on in April, and one of the areas he seems to believe the Saints shouldn’t stress early is skill position players.

Despite some of the offensive...

There have been quite a few moving parts with former New Orleans Saints players throughout the past few offseasons, with some working out and some not so much. Another player has been added to the list of free agents, as former Saints defensive tackle Sheldon Rankins was released by the Cincinnati Bengals, the team announced.

Rankins left the Saints back in the 2021 offseason signing a two-year deal with the New York Jets, which he played out. He would then sign with the Houston Texans for 2023, and then the Cincinnati Bengals on a two-year deal for 2024 and 2025. Unfortunately, he dealt...

PFF reveals shocking WR as Saints' most-picked prospect in mock drafts

The New Orleans Saints have plenty of holes to fill in the 2025 NFL draft, which means that a number of different positions could be addressed in the first round. The consensus likely options seem to be the defensive end spot first with both wide receiver and offensive line falling behind.

Shockingly, though, Pro Football Focus revealed the player that is most often picked for the Saints in their mock drafts and it was wide receiver Luther Burden III. Here was their explanation:

The Missouri Tigers star has been one of the most fun players to watch in college football, but the fit with...

Kellen Moore valuing familiarity as he builds his coaching staff

Kellen Moore has filled out the core of his New Orleans Saints offensive coaching staff, and it culminated with the hiring of Doug Nussmeier at offensive coordinator.

There are still some assistant positions available, but the New Orleans Saints now have their offensive coordinator and all position coaches hired. Wide receivers coach Keith Williams is the only coach who is confirmed to remain on the staff, as multiple offensive staff members followed Klint Kubiak to the Seattle Seahawks.

Other than Williams and running backs coach Joel Thomas, Moore stuck with hiring coaches he’d worked...

CBS Sports ranks Saints' 2024 draft class among the NFL's least impactful

The New Orleans Saints have had a rough few years of drafting and developing homegrown talent, and the early impressions of the 2024 rookies didn’t necessarily change that. Chris Trapasso of CBS Sports recently ranked each NFL team’s rookie class last season, and the Saints’ group came in at No. 23. Trapasso tried to highlight the positives, but they didn’t make much of an impact:

Fuaga was indeed the clear option for the Saints’ best rookie last season as he started all 17 games at left tackle and looked solid. There were certainly some growing pains in moving from right tackle to left...

The New Orleans Saints have finally started to figure some things out on the coaching front, which starts to shift the focus back towards the roster and it’s needs.

Pro Football Focus analyst Mason Cameron recently put together a list of the ‘dream’ offseason targets for each team: one draft pick and one free agent. For the Saints, both players had to do with addressing the defensive line.

A lot has been made of the weakness and need at defensive end heading into this offseason, but the interior is not in much better shape. The free agent picked for New Orleans would address that, Los...

The HBCU Legacy Bowl is an all star game for draft eligible players from Historically Black Colleges and Universities, and it’s in the New Orleans Saints backyard for the fourth year in a row. This week started with the HBCU Combine on Monday then continued with practices from Tuesday through Friday. The entire week of activities took place at the Saints indoor facility. All 32 teams sent scouts to the event, but it can be assumed the Saints had the largest presence since they were the hosts of the event. The Legacy Bowl itself is Saturday Feb. 22 at 3 p.m. CT. You can watch it on NFL Network. Here are

Highly-regarded Saints assistant coach is now a free agent, may not return for 2025

The New Orleans Saints may have another coach leaving this offseason, as many others have done already. With Kellen Moore coming in as the new head coach, things have begun to change a bit when it comes to the staff, and he was given the reigns on who he wanted to be his assistants, position coaches, and coordinators seemingly.

However, one of those who was left in the middle of two regimes, offensive assistant Kevin Petry, may also be on the way out. This became more likely recently, as Petry has become a free agent coach, as was reported by Nick Underhill of NewOrleans.Football.
